Bath, UK

Bath, UK

I live near the city of Bath in England. It is a very ancient city. The present city is built on the site of the original Roman settlement which they called Aquae Sulis. The original Roman baths are still in existence, and there are many Roman vaults beneath the present buildings in Bath.

In the eighteenth century Bath became a fashionable spa town, with many people visiting it in order to "take the waters". Many of the oldest buildings now in Bath date back to this time, and there are a number of Georgian houses in the centre of the city. The famous Pump Room and Assembly Rooms date from this time, and they were the places where people in "polite society" would go to be seen. There were many balls in the Assembly rooms. Fashionable people from London and from other places would take lodgings in Bath for many weeks each year in order to able to join in the society there.

Jane Austen, famous for her novels such as "Pride and Prejudice", often visited Bath, and almost all her novels have references to Bath, with her heroes and heroines also spending some time enjoying the society of the city.

Bath is still a fascinating place to visit today. One can visit the Roman baths and the Pump Room and Assembly Rooms, and there is also a Jane Austen museum. There are tea rooms which one can visit today which were also tea rooms over two hundred years ago. The modern visitor to Bath may ride on an open-topped double decker bus and have all the places of interest in the city pointed out to them by an extremely knowledgeable guide. It is also possible to ride in an original eighteenth century horse-drawn carriage. There are many street entertainers to be seen, some of whom are extremely talented. The original Georgian theatre, the Theatre Royal, is still in everyday use with a very varied repertoire of modern and period plays, also music and opera, and is a fascinating place of entertainment.

There is so much to see in Bath that I'm sure there is much thatI have not mentioned. If you ever get the chance to visit Bath, please do so, I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed!
