Do we live more than once?
William Wordsworth wrote a poem entitled "Intimations of Immortality." It talks about how a very small child has feelings and memories of a previous existence, memories which fade very quickly as the child gets older. When I was a very small child aged about four or five, I was absolutely fascinated by castles. There are many castles in the UK, although most of them are in a state of considerable disrepair, mainly because Oliver Cromwell tried to destroy them during the English Civil War in the seventeenth century, and it is not the policy of this country to reconstruct ancient buildings using modern materials. In the small market town where I lived, Pickering, in Yorkshire, there was one such castle. I would try to persuade anyone who came to visit us to take me to the castle because in some strange way I felt really at home there. Bear in mind that I was far too young to have any historical knowledge, but I would wander about the castle remains and imagine what it must once have looked like. I would envisage the tall spiral staircases whilst looking at the few steps which remained, and I would actually hear the swish of long gowns as ladies who lived long ago went up and down the staircases. I would imagine the sound of hoofbeats as horses were ridden into the castle courtyard, although now that courtyard was all covered in grass. Many years later I read a historical novel about a woman who lived in the fourteenth century, and I found to my astonishment that I knew much about her story before I actually read it, although as far as I knew I had never heard of her before! It is a historical fact that this lady lived in Pickering castle at one point in her life. I became convinced that I had in fact been this lady in a former life, and of course no one could possibly prove otherwise! |
