Do you believe in ghosts?
A few years ago we lived in a seventeenth century farmhouse in Suffolk, England. It had a long low thatched roof and the walls were made not of brick but of the original wattle and daub which was used before plastering was invented. It had an amazing ingle-nook fireplace, complete with bread oven, which was built with the narrow bricks of the Tudor period, and which had been covered up by previous owners, as had the beautiful oak beams in the ceiling. The house had a long wide landing which went almost the entire length of the house, and was like an extra room except that it was obviously used as a thoroughfare. A friend, who was definitely psychic, came to visit our house, and he claimed to feel a definite chill on the landing, far colder than the rest of the house. He was certain that he could feel some ghostly presence there, and he did not feel that the presence was entirely benign! As you know, children are often more intuitive than adults, and more aware of such presences. My son, then aged about three, had a bedroom at the far end of the landing. He frequently woke up crying in the night, claiming that there was an old man sitting on the end of his bed. We had to search his room for him, looking in all the cupboards and under the bed, but of course we found nothing. About a year later, in the middle of a long hot dry summer, the thatched roof of our house caught fire. In a matter of minutes, the fire had spread the whole length of the roof, and of course the entire roof, rafters etc were destroyed, as thatching is designed to shed water and it is practically impossible to put out a thatch fire. It took about nine months for our house to be rebuilt, this time with a roof of old peg tiles. That same friend came to visit again, and he went up on to the landing. When he came down he said that he could no longer feel the chill on the landing and he was sure that the presence was no longer there. My son never spoke of the old man who came into his bedroom, and the whole house seemed to be a much happier place. |
