Real (re-usable) nappies
Nowadays it is very important to consider how our everyday actions will affect the environment. We try to recycle as much of our waste as we can so as not to unnecessarily fill up landfill sites, but many people do not realise that disposable nappies (diapers!) are one of the single biggest categories of items which end up in landfill. Not only that, but they do not easily biodegrade, and can take up to 400 years to do so! Modern ‘real’ nappies are no longer the bulky unwieldy item that they used to be in the days of our mothers and grandmothers. Today there is a great variety of nappies to choose from. Most of them are shaped so that they are just as easy to put on as are disposables. They come in a variety of colours and can be made from cotton terry, lambswool or even bamboo, which is extreme absorbent. Many of them are made of unbleached and organic material – this is a question of choice. It is possible to obtain various inserts so that the nappies can be tailored to individual use, and are extremely comfortable. In my experience the incidence of nappy rash is much reduced when real nappies are used. ‘Breathable’ waterproof covers are obtainable, and come in a lovely variety of colours and patterns. They are easy to wash and dry. In addition, the babies are not subjected to the chemical gels which are in disposables, nor do they have bleached materials in close contact with their delicate skin. It is a fact that babies who wear real nappies are easier to toilet train, and do so earliet than babies who wear disposables. And of course the cost of using real nappies, bearing in mind the fact that they have to be washed, is less than half the price of disposables over the period of time they are in use. This cost is often dramatically further reduced when they are used for more than one child, as is perfectly possible. As far as I can see, the question of whether real nappies or disposables are best is a ‘no-brainer’; its real nappies every time!

Contributor's Note
I realise that what we refer to as 'nappies' in England are commonly called 'diapers' in USA!
